Victoria BC Points of Interest – BC Parliament Buildings

Visitors to Victoria’s inner harbour can’t miss the majestic grandeur of the BC Parliament Building which overlooks the bustling waterway.

The BC Parliament Building, which officially opened in 1898, is home to the provincial Legislative Assembly, where the BC Parliament gather to discuss the governance of the province and pass laws.

The splendid Neo-Baroque architecture of the Parliament Buildings make a memorable impression on visitors to the city, many of whom enjoy a rest or picnic on the beautifully manicured front lawns during the summer months.

Eagle eyed visitors should look up to the building’s central dome where they can see a gold covered statue of Captain George Vancouver. In the gardens a statue of Queen Victoria and a memorial for those who lost their lives in World wars one and two and the Korean war can be found.

Visitors may take a free guided or self-guided tour of the Parliament Building from Monday to Friday. Once inside you can visit the gift shop, eat in the parliamentary dining room or even observe parliamentary proceedings from the public gallery.

The inside of the building is as impressive as its exterior with over 100 stained and leaded glass windows and the neck achingly decorative central rotunda.

Arguably the best time to view the Parliament Buildings is at nighttime, when more than 3,600 light bulbs illuminate the iconic features of the building all year round.
